Wind and Weather

 

The trade winds bring year round winds to the Moroccan coast. The wind is most reliable in the summer months (April through September) when the heat creates a thermal effect accelerating the trade winds. The waves are the best over the winter months making spring and autumn the best combination of strong wind and powerful waves. The winds blow between 15-25 knots which can build up to 40 knots in the summer. The temperatures are warm though the wind can be cold so bringing warm clothes for the evenings is recommended as well as a thin wetsuit for your time on the water. All riding conditions are available including flatwater lagoons, small-large waves, amazing downwinders and a variety of spots to explore.

Flatwater

 

The 45km long flatwater lagoon in Dakhla is the perfect place to practice and improve your freestyle skills with plenty of space for everyone. Accommodations are available right on the lagoon with walking access to the kite spot. Kite from dawn until dusk and receive coaching and tips from some of the best freestyle riders. Dakhla is full of kiteboarders and is a great destination for solo travellers.

 

Flatwater can also be found in Essaouira Bay as well as at the river mouth when the tide is high. Agadir has a secret flatwater spot just 15 minutes south of the town though the spots will get crowded more quickly than Dakhla.

 

 

 

Waves

 

Though Dakhla is famous for its lagoon, on the Atlantic side of the peninsula (Oum Lbouer) are some amazing wave riding conditions. Accommodations are available in Oum Lbouer as well as in Dakhla town or right on that lagoon all within 15km of the wave spot.

 

Essaouira is popular for wave riding. Stay in the centre of the old town in a traditional riad surrounded by shops and local restaurants within walking distance to Essaouira Bay. Kitesurfing in Essaouira, Morocco

Essaouira is located on the Northeast coast of Morocco and is known as the ‘Wind City in Africa”. The strong summer winds detour the hordes of tourists travelling down the coast leaving Essaouira rich in tradition and culture. Though the winds scare off most tourists, Essaouira has become a popular spot for kiteboarding with strong wind and any conditions from flat water to waves just a few hours flight from Europe. The medina with local shops, hotels and restaurants is only 10 minutes walking from kite beach making everything easily accessible without a car.

 

 

Wind and Weather

 

The trade winds blow through the whole year and are strongest in the summer months starting April-September when the thermal winds kick in and the accelerate the trade winds. The winds are generally between 15-25 knots but sometimes climb to 40 knots in peak summer. The air temperatures reach 30 degrees C (86F) in the summer with water temperatures sitting around 17-20 degrees (62-68F). Though the water is fairly warm, a thin wetsuit is recommended, especially when the wind are blowing strong.

 

Kitesurfing in Essaouira Bay Morocco offers both flat water and waves. The water is flat until about 100m out where the waves start to form. The best wave spots in the area are Sidi Kaouki and Moulay Bouzerktoun.
