Kitesurfing Dakhla Morocco

Kitesurfing in Morocco and Dakhla

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, looking for waves, flatwater or a combination of both, there is a destination for kitesurfing in Morocco and Dakhla for you. Visit one of the worlds largest flatwater lagoons in Dakhla next to the Western Sahara Desert, find amazing waves along the Atlantic side of the Dakhla Peninsula as well as Essaouira, Agadir and everywhere in between. Have a relaxing holiday in a beachfront bungalow enjoying the wind, waves and the company of other world wide travellers or join a road trip from Essaouira to Dakhla exploring secret lagoons, untouched, uncrowded beaches with world class wave riding and experiencing traditional culture in small towns and villages along the way.

Wind and Weather

The trade winds bring year round winds to the Moroccan coast. The wind is most reliable in the summer months (April through September) when the heat creates a thermal effect accelerating the trade winds. The waves are the best over the winter months making spring and autumn the best combination of strong wind and powerful waves. The winds blow between 15-25 knots which can build up to 40 knots in the summer. The temperatures are warm though the wind can be cold so bringing warm clothes for the evenings is recommended as well as a thin wetsuit for your time on the water. All riding conditions are available including flatwater lagoons, small-large waves, amazing downwinders and a variety of spots to explore.

Kite Camps

Joining a kite camp is a great way to enjoy a Moroccan holiday. Camps are available to all skill levels and abilities including beginners, freestyle riders and wave riders. The local instructors will guide you to the best locations depending on the wind and wave as well as help you progress in your discipline. Camps can include a combination of the following services: accommodation, lessons/coaching, breakfast/meals, spot transfers, gear rentals, downwinders and no wind activities.

For Beginners

Dakhla is the best location for learning in Morocco with endless flat water and little dangers, though beginner lessons are also available Essaouira and Agadir which are cheaper and easier destinations to travel to. Camps are available for learning as well as daily lessons in all the different kite spots.

Flatwater

The 45km long flatwater lagoon in Dakhla is the perfect place to practice and improve your freestyle skills with plenty of space for everyone. Accommodations are available right on the lagoon with walking access to the kite spot. Kite from dawn until dusk and receive coaching and tips from some of the best freestyle riders. Dakhla is full of kiteboarders and is a great destination for solo travellers.

Flatwater can also be found in Essaouira Bay as well as at the river mouth when the tide is high. Agadir has a secret flatwater spot just 15 minutes south of the town though the spots will get crowded more quickly than Dakhla.

Waves

Though Dakhla is famous for its lagoon, on the Atlantic side of the peninsula (Oum Lbouer) are some amazing wave riding conditions. Accommodations are available in Oum Lbouer as well as in Dakhla town or right on that lagoon all within 15km of the wave spot.

Essaouira is popular for wave riding. Stay in the centre of the old town in a traditional riad surrounded by shops and local restaurants within walking distance to Essaouira Bay. The bay is great for kitesurfing, though there are many other more advanced wave spots in the area. Join in on a kite camp for access to some amazing wave riding most of which are accessible by 4×4.

The Agadir area is also home to amazing surfing conditions. Accommodations are available in Tamraght situated on a hillside with beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean. Booking a camp is the best way to experience the area as the locals will assess the conditions and bring you to the best spots depending on the waves, weather and ability level of their riders.
