10 Best Kitesurf Locations for Families
Traveling with your whole family isn’t always a walk in the park- especially if you’re adding kids to the mix. Between navigating airports, transfers, and transport (and keeping everyone fed and happy along the way) the trip itself can be pretty challenging. If you’re heading off on a kitesurfing holiday, your top priority is going to be to maximise your time on the water- no question.
But chances are:
If you’re bringing your family along for the ride, not everyone will share the same interest.
The trick is to find a place that’s easy to get to, has great local infrastructure, top notch facilities, is safe, relaxed, and fun for everyone. To that end, we’ve scoured the globe in search of the best kitesurf locations for families, according to these key factors:
-Ease of access (distance from nearest airport)
-Vibe of the location
-Safety, space, and facilities on the beach
-Non-kiting family-friendly activities

1. Tulum, Mexico
With a reliable season that runs from November to May, Tulum is an epic place to escape to during the chilly winter months. Steeped in incredible culture, Tulum is all ancient Mayan temples and beautiful underwater caves. Scuba diving and paddle boarding are popular family activities, as are trips to the nearby pyramid, Chichen Itza.
2. Cabarete, Dominican Republic
Cabarete, one of the Caribbean’s kiteboarding meccas, is a fantastic choice for a family kitesurfing holiday thanks to its close proximity to the nearest airport (Puerto Plata) and the solid mix of non-kiting adventure activities on offer (think mountain biking, fishing, and canyoneering). It also enjoys year round wind, so you won’t have to worry about your holiday time coinciding with the ‘on-season’.
3. Langebaan, South Africa
Conveniently located just an hour outside of Cape Town, Langebaan has something for everyone. Kiters will be in their element in Langebaan’s legendary conditions, and the rest of the family will be spoiled for choice with safaris, whale watching, and fossil parks all within a stone’s throw.
4. Tarifa, Spain
An easy short-haul trip for anyone in Europe, Tarifa is splitting at the seams with interesting culture, delicious food, and vibrant local life. While its kitesurfing conditions are known throughout the world, non-kiters will have plenty to do both at the beach and n the town.
5. Rhodes, Greece
Greece is packed full of awesome family friendly kitesurfing locations (Naxos and Paros are other favourites of ours), and sitting at the top of that list is Rhodes, thanks to its gorgeous scenery and abundance of off-the-water activities.
The Caribbean makes a second appearance on our list of best kitesurf locations for families- and for good reason. Aruba’s year round wind, beautiful beaches, friendly local people, and safe communities make it a great choice for a family kitesurf holiday.
7. Sicily, Italy
If some members of your family aren’t into kiting, Sicily is a solid choice because it ticks a lot of boxes when it comes to culture, food, and beautiful scenery. That said, if you’re interested in teaching some other members of your family how to kite (and this includes kids), Sicily should definitely be on your radar.
8. Hua Hin, Thailand
Thanks to its ease of access from both its own local airport and Thailand’s biggest airport in Bangkok, Hua Hin is a top contender if you’re looking for a kitesurf location in the tropics that isn’t a pain to get to. With a big, spacious beach and a lively outlying city, Hua Hin has something for everyone in the family.
9. Phan Rang, Vietnam
One of Southeast Asia’s most promising kitesurfing destinations, Phan Rang is the place to go to if your family is up for a truly authentic local experience. The outlying area is rugged and rural, and the kitesurfing spot is a dream. Located just an hour away from Cam Ranh International Airport, it’s also relatively easy to get to.
10. Algarve, Portugal
With nearly year-round sun, ease of access to the airport, and bucket-loads of safe beaches to learn kiteboarding on, the Algarve is well-deserving of a place on this list.
Location aside, what kind of kite experiences are best for families?
Families come in all shapes and sizes, so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. That said:
If we had to nail down one type of experience that seems to suit a lot of families across the board, there’s no denying kite cruises are an awesome choice. Cruises are a great option for families, because:
-You’re always together
-You have your privacy
-You have the freedom to move around on the charter as you please
-There’s tons of non-kiting activities on offer (think snorkeling, swimming, sailing, and just relaxing onboard)
